Fifty Four Years as a band director and clinician in the state of Florida
My story
Mr. Ponder began teaching at Forrest High School as assistant band director in 1970. He then moved to Fletcher Junior until 1976 when he helped open Mayport Junior High. In 1980, Mr. Ponder became band director at Fletcher High School where he taught for ten years. For the next sixteen years, Mr. Ponder was band director at Mandarin High School. In 2006, he began a new band program at Christ’s Church Academy where he has begun his 53rd year as a band director.
Bands directed by Mr. Ponder have been rated Superior at District and State levels many times.
Some of these bands performed in Washington DC, London, England and Vienna, Austria.
As clinician/adjudicator, Mr. Ponder has served all over Florida as well as in other states. He has been a member of Florida Bandmasters Association since 1970. He has served as District Chair or District Secretary eight times. He has served as District Honor Band Chair more than ten years. He has served on several committees for the Florida Bandmasters Association. Mr. Ponder will be inducted onto the Florida Bandmasters Association Hall of Fame in 2022.
As a member of American School Band Directors Association, Mr. Ponder served as State Chair, and was on the National Board for nine years where he was Secretary, Treasurer and National President. During his tenure as State Chair, he set up hearing tests for band directors during the summer convention on two successive years. The data from these tests was published in Band World magazine and helped many directors change band room acoustics to protect their hearing. It was also used in some court cases involving hearing loss. As National President, he chaired the convention in Columbus, Ohio.
Other professional memberships include Florida Music Educators Association and Phi Beta Mu.
In 2019 Mr. Ponder was honored with the Oliver Hobbs award.
In 2022 Mr. Ponder was inducted onto the Florida Bandmasters Association Hall of Fame.
Mr. Ponder earned his Bachelor of Music Education from The Florida State University in 1970, his Master of Arts in Teaching from Jacksonville University in 1976 and continues to take post graduate courses at FSU when time allows. He continues his education by attending clinics around the country.
